Home Upgrades Program waitlist

Administered by Kambo Energy Group, on behalf of the City of Calgary, and in Canmore.

Free home upgrades for income-qualified households in Calgary and Canmore: an assessment, then a high-efficiency furnace, insulation, air sealing or low-flow toilets, installed at no cost and with no lien on the home. Calgary's upgrade stream is taking names for a waitlist.

What it pays

What can be installed, at no cost

  • A high-efficiency furnace
  • Insulation and air sealing
  • Low-flow toilets and other upgrades the assessment picks for the home
  • For everyone who applies: energy education, and a free RetroKit of LED bulbs, leak-detection tablets and a power bar

No published cap — and that is the honest answer

Nothing is paid to you and no value is published: "all program costs are covered". Not every applicant gets a furnace; the programme weighs what an upgrade would change in the home against how heavy the household's energy bills are.

Who is eligible

Who can apply

  • A detached house, duplex or townhouse built before 1998, in Calgary or Canmore
  • Your name is on the utility bill
  • Household income under the line for your city, counting everyone 18 or older
  • Canmore households in the Town's Affordability Services Program qualify automatically
  • A landlord who lives with renters adds the rental income, and the renter must also qualify

What disqualifies you

The rules people find out about after the work is done.

  • Mobile homes: "We are not currently accepting applications from mobile homeowners."
  • Homes built in 1998 or later.

Where the application goes

Apply online; in Calgary you join the waitlist for upgrades, while workshops and kits stay open.

The thing most pages get wrong

The programme's own site disagrees with itself. Its main page publishes one income table and its Calgary page another, $49,296 against $52,884 for one person; the Calgary page says the upgrades are "open to both homeowners and renters" while the main FAQ says "we are not accepting renters at this time". Ask which applies before you count on it.

No longer in Edmonton or St. Albert

From 2023 to early 2025 the same programme also served Edmonton and St. Albert. It now serves Calgary and Canmore only. The City of Calgary pays for its stream.
