Michigan Weatherization Assistance Program open
Administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), through local Community Action Agencies.
Free insulation, air sealing and furnace or water heater tune-up or replacement for Michigan homeowners and renters with low incomes, decided by an energy audit of the home. The usual line is 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, $66,000 a year for a family of four.

What it pays
No published cap — and that is the honest answer
No per-home figure is published. The work is free, chosen by a whole-home energy audit, and no one service is guaranteed: the program installs only what saves energy, and is not a repair or rehab program.
What the audit can lead to
- Air sealing, weather-stripping and caulking
- Attic, foundation, wall or sill box insulation
- Furnace or water heater tune-up or replacement
- Refrigerator replacement
- A programmable thermostat and lighting
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Who is eligible
| People in household | One month | Three months |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $2,660 | $7,980 |
| 2 | $3,606 | $10,818 |
| 3 | $4,553 | $13,659 |
| 4 | $5,500 | $16,500 |
| 5 | $6,446 | $19,338 |

The thing most pages get wrong
Several Michigan utility pages still print last year's poverty line for programs that use it: DTE's low-income page shows $2,608 a month for one person at 200% and Consumers Energy's Helping Neighbors chart $64,300 for four. The 2026 line, which Wayne Metro's weatherization table uses, is $2,660 a month for one and $66,000 a year for four.
Weatherization and the federal rebates
MiHER's FAQ points households that need work now to weatherization. A household can use both, but not for the same upgrade, and MiHER counts weatherization as automatic income proof only in counties where 80% of area median income is above 200% of poverty.
What it is not
MDHHS is plain that weatherization is not a repair or rehab program: a leaking roof or failing wiring can make a home wait until it is fixed. The initial energy audit decides whether the home is ready.
