Minnesota Weatherization Assistance Program open

Administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, through local weatherization service providers.

Minnesota weatherizes homes free for owners and renters with income up to the higher of 200% of the poverty guidelines or 50% of state median income: $71,999 a year for a family of four on the 2026 table. A local provider audits the home and can insulate walls and attics, seal air leaks and repair or replace the furnace, boiler or water heater. You apply on the same form as Energy Assistance.

What it pays

No published cap — and that is the honest answer

Commerce publishes no per-home maximum for households. The local provider's free energy assessment decides which cost-effective improvements are made.

What the work can include

  • Exterior wall and attic insulation
  • Air leakage reduction
  • Furnace, boiler and water heater repair or replacement
  • Advice on reducing energy use, such as using a programmable thermostat

The thing most pages get wrong

Minnesota's weatherization line is not 200% of poverty. For a family of four, 200% of the 2026 poverty guidelines is $66,000, but Minnesota uses whichever is greater of that or 50% of state median income, and its 2026 table shows $71,999. For seven and eight people the two tests meet, at $100,080 and $111,440.

Expect a wait

Commerce says the wait after eligibility 'varies between local service providers', and its 2021-22 working group estimated it 'would take over 290 years to serve all income-eligible households in Minnesota'. Apply early and ask your provider about its list.

One form, two programs

Energy Assistance and Weatherization use a joint application, so applying for help with heating bills also puts you in line for weatherization.
