New Jersey Moderate-income Home Weatherization (utilities) open

Administered by each of New Jersey's investor-owned electric and gas utilities, under the state's Triennium 2 energy efficiency programs.

New Jersey's utilities weatherize homes free for households earning between 250% and 400% of the poverty line, $82,501 to $132,000 for four, or living in a moderate-income census tract: up to $14,000 of insulation, air sealing and other upgrades and $2,500 of health and safety work at JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric, South Jersey Gas and NJ Natural Gas.

What disqualifies you

The rules people find out about after the work is done.

  • Homes in foreclosure, built in the last five years or under a builder's warranty.
  • Homes for sale (PSE&G).
  • Household income below 250% of the poverty line, which goes to Comfort Partners instead.

The thing most pages get wrong

Free weatherization is usually a low-income program; this one is for moderate incomes. It starts where Comfort Partners stops, at 250% of the poverty line, and runs to 400%, $132,000 for a family of four, or covers anyone living in a moderate-income census tract.

Worth up to $16,500

South Jersey Gas puts it as 'up to $16,500 worth of free home improvements': the $14,000 of energy upgrades and $2,500 of health and safety work together.

Ends with the Triennium

The utility programs run under Triennium 2, which NJBPU budgeted for 1 January 2025 to 30 June 2027.
