New Jersey Weatherization Assistance Program open

Administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), through local weatherization providers.

The state's federally funded weatherization program insulates, seals and can replace inefficient appliances free for households at or below 200% of the poverty guidelines, $66,000 for a family of four, with priority for the elderly, people with disabilities and households with the highest energy burden. It is also where Comfort Partners sends oil-, propane- and kerosene-heated homes.

What it pays

No published cap — and that is the honest answer

Free; no per-home amount is published. The work is decided by an energy audit of the home.

DCA says the program may provide eligible households with energy-efficient appliances. Applications go through the DCAid online portal or the local provider.

The thing most pages get wrong

New Jersey has two free weatherization programs with different income lines, and they are easy to confuse. DCA's program stops at 200% of the poverty guidelines ($66,000 for four); the utilities' Comfort Partners goes to 250% ($82,500) for gas and electric customers, and sends homes heated by oil, propane or kerosene here.

Heating with oil or propane

Comfort Partners refers households whose main heat is oil, propane or kerosene to DCA's Office of Weatherization at 800-510-3102, because the utility programs are paid for by gas and electric customers.

Proof of income

DCA asks for tax forms, pay stubs, bank statements, award letters or a zero-income statement for everyone in the household.
