Efficiency Nova Scotia instant rebates open

Administered by Efficiency Nova Scotia, through participating retailers; free installations by Homesol and Summerhill.

Money off at the till, with no assessment and no application: $800 on an ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater and $45 on a smart thermostat for electric heat, with smaller amounts on pool pumps and heat pump dryers. In a home with electric heat, a free professionally installed smart thermostat is the better deal.

The thing most pages get wrong

Efficiency Nova Scotia's heat pump page is titled with "rebates up to $5,000", and there is no stand-alone heat pump rebate behind that line. Heat pumps are paid through the Home Energy Assessment route, after a $199 assessment, and the same page says "rebates are not available for replacement heat pumps". The rebate you can get without an assessment is the $800 on a heat pump water heater.

Free beats $45

If your heat is electric, the free installation puts in a smart thermostat Efficiency Nova Scotia values at up to $160, at no cost, and the installer can add other free devices. The $45 instant rebate is for people who want to choose and fit their own. Both are for electric heat only.
