Oil to Electric Incentive Program open

Administered by takeCHARGE, the joint efficiency brand of Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, in partnership with the federal and provincial governments.

Newfoundland and Labrador's oil-to-electric conversion incentive, and the one place in Atlantic Canada where a federally supported oil conversion is still open. It pays on two scales — income-qualified and general — and the money goes to the installer, not to you.

What disqualifies you

The rules people find out about after the work is done.

  • A household that already received a heat pump rebate through the Canada Greener Homes Grant before 1 April 2023 cannot get a heat pump incentive here.
  • New homes.
  • Homes not connected to the island or Labrador interconnected grid.

Where the application goes

Which utility bills you decides where the paper goes, but the online door is shared.

The thing most pages get wrong

This is the last oil-conversion door open in Atlantic Canada. New Brunswick closed to registration on 30 June 2026 and Nova Scotia on 2 July 2026. takeCHARGE says the programme is still accepting applications with no closure date determined, and tells people to apply as soon as possible rather than wait.

And the second thing

The money never passes through your hands — incentives are paid directly to a participating installer, so the quote you are shown should already be net of it. That also means the choice of installer decides whether you can claim at all.

Status note

An income-qualified household pre-approved for a central heat pump, a multi-split, or multiple mini-splits is mailed a one-time $250 payment from Natural Resources Canada after enrolment — it arrives automatically, on top of the incentive. Separately, takeCHARGE warns that an application resting on the bare minimum fuel record — exactly 500 litres — or on an oil tank registered or installed since 1 January 2025 will draw extra scrutiny and may be rejected.
