Peak Perks open

Administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), through Save on Energy.

Ontario's electricity system operator pays $75 when you enrol a smart thermostat that runs central air conditioning or a central heat pump, and $20 a year after, for letting it nudge the temperature up to two degrees on a few hot summer afternoons. Renters and small businesses can join.

How an event works

  • The thermostat may first drop one degree for 30 minutes to pre-cool the home.
  • During the event it is raised up to two degrees Celsius above its setting.
  • Events happen on the hottest summer days, when Ontario's grid demand peaks.
  • You can opt out of any event from the thermostat or its app.

Who is eligible

who
Residential electricity customers of an Ontario local utility, owners or renters, with central air conditioning controlled by a smart thermostat; heat pumps that are part of central air conditioning count.
thermostat
An eligible internet-connected model from the programme's list.
homes
Low-rise condos and apartments with their own air conditioning qualify; high-rise units on a central building plant do not.
limit
The incentive is capped at three thermostats per residential address.

Not eligible: Cornwall is on Hydro-Québec's grid.

What disqualifies you

The rules people find out about after the work is done.

  • Window units or ductless systems not controlled by a smart thermostat on central air.
  • Taking part in another residential demand response programme in Ontario.
  • A second enrolment payment for the same household after a move or a new thermostat.

The thing most pages get wrong

Its own page still advertises the Home Renovation Savings thermostat rebate as "$75 Off". Home Renovation Savings pays $100 for a qualified smart thermostat bought and activated by 31 December 2026 (Save on Energy's own page shows $75 struck out and $100). A household buying a thermostat and enrolling it can collect both: $100 off, then $75 on enrolment.

The $20 has a cut-off

The page describes the yearly $20 only for 2025 and 2026, each paid to thermostats enrolled before 30 September of the year before. It publishes no date for a 2027 payment, so a thermostat enrolled now is sure of the $75 and nothing more yet.

Not for heating

Peak Perks adjusts cooling only, on summer afternoons. It pays nothing toward a heat pump; Home Renovation Savings does.
