Saint John Energy heat pump rental open

Administered by Saint John Energy, the city-owned utility, under its Zero30 plan; installed by Greenfoot Energy Solutions.

A ductless heat pump with nothing to pay up front: Saint John Energy installs, services and replaces it for a monthly rent from $55.36, and most New Brunswickers can rent one, not only its own customers. The catch is that you never own it: there is no buyout, and the minimum term is three years.

Who is eligible

Who can rent

  • Most New Brunswickers, including people outside Saint John, who also sign a pre-authorized payment agreement
  • Homes and businesses, and more than one unit per home
  • A free 30 to 40 minute assessment comes first: the electrical panel, the layout and where you spend your time

What disqualifies you

The rules people find out about after the work is done.

  • A home where the heat pump would be the only heat source for the space it serves: Saint John Energy requires another heating option as backup.

The thing most pages get wrong

The rebate line needs a condition. Saint John Energy says rented units get "Rebates of up to $400/heat pump through the Total Home Energy Savings Program" and that "All models qualify". NB Power does pay $400 per mini-split, but its programme guidelines say rented equipment may be eligible only "with prior approval of the rental agreement by NB Power", and Total Home starts with a $99 evaluation before the work.

Renting against buying

At the starting rate, the three-year minimum comes to about $1,993 in rent ($55.36 a month for 36 months), and the payments carry on for as long as the unit stays. Buying through the same utility's financing is capped at $10,000 over seven years, after which the heat pump is yours.

The on-bill retrofit loan is not open yet

In June 2025 Saint John Energy announced a federally funded programme, $15 million through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund, to lend for insulation, heat pumps and solar, repaid on the power bill. It has no programme page yet. What you can use now is the $10,000 heat pump financing.
