Washington Weatherization Assistance Program open

Administered by the Washington State Department of Commerce, through local weatherization agencies in each county.

Free insulation, air sealing, heating repairs and safety work for homeowners and renters with household income up to 200% of the poverty line, 60% of state median income or 80% of area median income. For a family of four the state median line, $83,587, is the higher of the first two.

What it pays

No published cap — and that is the honest answer

Commerce publishes no per-home maximum for Washington's program. The local agency's energy audit decides the work; the program is not a window replacement program and does not guarantee any particular upgrade.

Some agencies have long waiting lists. An emergency can sometimes be handled sooner, but only once the household is found eligible.

The thing most pages get wrong

Weatherization is usually described as a 200%-of-poverty program, $66,000 for a family of four. Washington lets agencies use whichever is greater, 200% of poverty or 60% of state median income, or 80% of area median income; for four people the state median line alone is $83,587.

Utilities add money

Puget Sound Energy, Avista, Cascade Natural Gas and the city of Seattle all route income-qualified customers to free weatherization through local agencies, sometimes with their own funds on top.
