Energy Efficiency Assistance Program open

Administered by Efficiency Manitoba, the province's energy efficiency utility.

Manitoba's income-tested programme, and one of the most generous in the country: a free assessment, free insulation and, in an electrically heated home, a free heat pump, air source or ground source. Owners, renters and landlords can all apply.

The thing most pages get wrong

The free heat pump is real, but only for homes heated by electricity: an electric furnace, electric baseboards or an electric boiler. A gas-heated home under the income line gets a subsidised high-efficiency furnace instead, not a heat pump.

And the second thing

Manitoba's income lines are lower than B.C.'s for the equivalent programme: $46,264 for one person here against $51,100 in B.C.'s Energy Conservation Assistance Program, and $85,968 for four against $94,900.

Federal money

Natural Resources Canada names this programme as the Manitoba route into the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program. Efficiency Manitoba also presents it as part of the province's Affordable Home Energy Program. You apply once, to Efficiency Manitoba.
